I don’t know anybody who doesn’t enjoy a beautifully cooked roast beef. What could be better?…Well according to many of the roast beef fans that I hear from, leftover roast beef is almost as good as the real thing (almost). Leftover roast beef can keep safely in the refrigerator for at least a few days, and can be used in a variety of ways and recipes.
Some uses for leftover roast beef:
- Bubble and Squeak, Roast Beef Sandwiches, Shepard’s Pie, Leftover Roast Beef Casserole, Beef Stew, Leftover Beef Enchiladas, Beef Stir Fry, Leftover Roast Beef Salad, Beef Soups, and the list can go on and on.
In fact the ability to use leftover roast beef in such a variety of recipes is a big part of the attraction of cooking roast beef in the first place. The flavor of the beef is retained, but the leftover roast beef can often have a different texture which makes it particularly suitable to use in sandwiches, salads and cold meat dishes. The versatility of using leftover roast beef means that there really is very little that goes to waste, which can help those cooking on a budget or those who simply don’t like to waste food.
Leftover roast beef is perfect to eat in cold meat dishes, but it is also safe to be reheated and used in hot beef dishes, providing proper reheating practices are followed. Even if the amount of leftover roast beef isn’t enough to make a meal in itself as with some of the above dishes, a smaller amount can be creatively used as a flavoring or enhancement to another dishes. For example an omelette, chilli dishes, sauces, gravy, salads, etc.
The truth is whenever we cook a roast beef in our house, we always try to cook more than we will need. We find that if we plan to make several other dishes from the leftover roast beef, the initial purchase of a larger beef cut or even a bulk purchase of beef, can be more economical than simply buying the exact amount for one meal.
